FEWsteps – Chia seeds

For all those of you who have asked me what those strange looking seeds are floating in my drinking water, here is some more info –

Chia Seeds
Chia seed are an ancient superfood, a member of the sage family (Salvia Hispanica).
Chia was once a staple of the Incan, Mayan and Aztec cultures, along with the Native Americans of the southwest.

“Chia” is the Mayan word for strength, and the seeds were used by ancient cultures for super-energy.  People would carry a small pouch of chia with them and add it to their drinking water, to boost and sustain their journey.

Chia seeds are said to have:

  • 2 times the protein of any other seed or grain.
  • 5 times the calcium of milk, plus boron (a trace mineral that helps transfer calcium into your bones)
  • 2 times the amount of potassium as bananas
  • 3 times the reported antioxidant strength of blueberries
  • 3 times more iron than spinach
  • Plus omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids

Chia seeds are a complete source of protein, providing all the essential amino acids in an easily digestible form, as well as a great source of soluble fibre.

Hydration
When placed in your drinking water, these little seeds absorb the water rapidly and create a mucilaginous gel, holding about 10 times their own weight in water – because of this exceptional water-absorption quality the chia seed is number one for helping with hydration and maintaining electrolyte balance.

Weight loss
Chia is great too for those wishing to lose weight, as it makes you feel full whilst proving valuable superfood nutrition, and useful hydration for the elimination of toxicity – leaving you feeling light, and energised.

Digestion
Good for digestion, chia helps clean the intestinal tract, dislodging and eliminate old stagnant waste.

There are many recipes available for chia – breads, crackers and delicious simple puddings.
Chia seed protein contains no gluten.

I just tend to put it in my drinking water as I find this a simple, easy way to take it regularly.  It does look like frogs spawn as it swells up, which can be amusing, especially for children – and even more so if you add blue / green algae to it for an extra boost.  Luckily it doesn’t taste like frogs spawn, actually it doesn’t taste of anything, but it looks fun to drink – especially when the light hits it, it all sparkles.
